Fossil - Spine of the Sea Serpent (Palaeophis)
Hold a piece of ancient mystery in your hand with these fossilized vertebral bones from a sea serpent that lived 55 million years ago. These specimens belong to the genus Palaeophis, which means "ancient snake", and provide a rare insight into one of the most enigmatic creatures of the Paleogene period.

Although relatively little is known about these sea snakes, we do know that some species could grow up to 12 meters long – considerably larger than today's sea snakes which reach around 3 meters. Fossils of Palaeophis are found almost exclusively in marine deposits, suggesting that they were adapted to life in the sea. However, whether they were venomous like their modern-day relatives is still unclear.

Why you'll love it:
‱ A unique fossil that lets you hold a piece of ancient sea life in your hand.
‱ Perfect for fossil lovers, science enthusiasts and anyone with a fascination for prehistoric predators.

‱ Each capsule contains two vertebral bones, making it a fascinating little collection.
